 YOUR STAY WITH US > VISITING BANDUNG Bandung, affectionately called ‘the flower city’, is the provincial capital of West Java and Indonesia' s third largest city. Banding is known in colonial times as the Paris of Java because of its European ambiance and sophistication. Situated in the uplands of western Java at an elevation of 715 m (2,350 ft) in a scenic region dominated by high volcanoes, across beautiful Parahayangan mountains, Bandung's pleasant climate and lush surroundings have offered an escape from the heat of the lowlands since the mid 19th century when it was the heart of the region's most prosperous plantation area. Originally a garrison town, Bandung grew rapidly in importance after a railway line reached the city in 1884. The city served for a time as headquarters of the colonial government of the Netherlands East Indies, Dutch colonial architecture survive in Bandung today. Host to the historic Asia Africa conference in 1955, Bandung is now a major industrial center, producing textiles, dyes, chemicals, aircraft, machinery, and quinine. Bandung is also renowned for its shopping, particularly for shoes, textiles, clothing and denims which are found in the colorful Jeans street and numerous outlets. Easily reached from Jakarta by train, vehicle or airplane, Bandung is a popular second stop for those visiting the national capital and an essential stay-over for travelers enroute through Java. |
